The Western Corridor of the Dedicated Freight Corridor Project is being executed in two phases.
Phase Ⅰ: Construction of double line electrified railway track with signalling & telecommunication system and related infrastructure between Rewari - Vadodara section (approx. 922 route km) of phase 1 of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor Phase Ⅱ: Construction of double line electrified railway track with signalling & telecommunication system and related infrastructure between Rewari-Dadri section and JNPT-Vadodara section (approx. 555 Route Km and Procurement of Electric LocomotivesThe Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) project entails construction of double railway lines capable of handling 25 ton axle load initially and 32.5 ton axle load eventually and longer trains. Upgrading of transportation technology, increase in productivity and reduction in unit transportation costs have been taken as guiding principles for formulating the project. Various operation systems, motive power signalling and work processes are planned to realize this broad objective.
In India, volume of freight transportation has been increasing at the rate of 15% per year, while the capacity of rail transportation network is approaching the limit. It is essential to improve and strengthen railways in order to tackle sharp increase of container freight, agriculture products/industrial products/natural resources and to accelerate economic growth of India. Especially, it is strongly required to strengthen the capacity of rail transportation between the capital city, Delhi and the main port city, Mumbai.
